Absence Reporting

It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to report their student’s absence each day. We don’t make assumptions about attendance based on previous absences since circumstances can change daily.

Parent(s)/Guardian(s) can report a student's absences through:

Attendance line: 408-287-6309

or

Email: amarquez@sjusd.org

  • Please include the following information:
  • Student's first and last name
  • Teacher's name
  • Why they are absent
  • Date of absence
  • Name of person reporting the absence

If an absence has not been reported the day of, parent(s)/guardian(s) will have 5 instructional days to excuse their student’s absence. It will remain unexcused if an absence has not been cleared within the 5 instructional days.

Please see the Parent/Student Handbook for more information about excused and unexcused absences.

Truancy

California law requires that all children ages 6-18 be enrolled in full-time education. Attending school helps children learn and build relationships, as well as build social-emotional well-being. Strong attendance is linked to students being more likely to read at grade-level by the end of third grade and is also a key predictor of high school graduation. San José Unified uses a standardized attendance process when working with families to help students get back to school and engaged in their own learning. Please see below for more information about truancy.

Withdrawal from Terrell

If you are moving and are withdrawing your student from school, please call the school a few days prior to your move at (408) 535-6255. This will give ample time to complete the necessary paperwork. Please include:

  • Student's first and last name
  • Teacher
  • Last day of attendance
  • New school name
